About
Raster Pine
A devlog about writing a 3D engine in Java — LWJGL 3 for the bindings, GLFW for the window, and OpenGL called directly, with no engine or scene library standing in between. Each problem gets a video; each video gets a written version here.
The tutorials aren't a course and don't pretend the path is straight. When something renders wrong, that goes in too, because the debugging is the part nobody films and the part everyone needs.
The stack
- Java 21 — records, sealed types, text blocks for GLSL.
- LWJGL 3.3 — thin bindings over GLFW, OpenGL, stb, OpenAL.
- OpenGL 3.3 core — old enough to run everywhere, modern enough to be worth learning.
- JOML — the maths, because writing a fourth mat4 class helps nobody.
- Gradle — one build file, native classifiers per platform.
Who's making it
One developer, working on this in evenings, learning graphics programming properly after years of using engines that did it for me.
Elsewhere
- YouTube — the videos, first.
- hello@rasterpine.com — corrections welcome, especially about the maths.
